Joshua

My 13 year old son Joshua is highly mentally disabled. This means he still does not speak although he has a wide variety of "play words". Also, he is not fully potty trained. I often describe Joshua as a two year old in a young man's body. Physically, Joshua is very healthy & strong. One of his pastimes is to play outside where he likes to dig & toss dirt. The other day I stepped outside to check on Josh & found   David who is eleven sitting with Josh & tossing dirt also. I suggested to David that he find a more creative way to play with Josh, something that might motivate Josh to do something besides toss dirt! David replied, " But mom, this is not just throwing dirt, we are communicating!"    Whoa.....maybe I am the one who has something to learn?                                                                                                                                   Romans 12:16 " Be of the same mind toward one another. Do not set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own opinion."                                                                                           Love & prayers, in Jesus, Cynthia

  1. It's amazing how children somehow manage to see the things we can't! It's so beautiful that your sons have found a way to communicate with each other that both can enjoy . . . although I certainly see why you want them to try to play together in more complex (and less dirty) ways. Thank you so much for sharing this. Beautiful story!

  2. I love this story. I need to remember this with my own kids - to get down in the dirt with them and communicate with them on their level. It's amazing how much they can teach us!
