Loving our enemies....going the "extra mile"
I've been reading & thinking about the words of Jesus lately...especially these in Matthew 5; "You have heard that it was said, 'AN EYE FOR AN EYE, AND A TOOTH FOR A TOOTH.' "But I say to you , do not resist him who is evil; but whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, let him have your coat also. And whoever shall force you to go one mile, go with him two. Give to him who asks of you, and do not turn away from him who wants to borrow from you. You have heard that it was said, 'YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR, AND HATE YOUR ENEMY.' But I say to you, love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you in order that you may be sons of your Father Who is in heaven; for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax gatherers do the same? And if you greet your brothers only, what do you do more than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? Therefore, you are to be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect." I've been thinking about why someone would force us to go a mile with them and how it could easily be a "divine appointment" to witness to somebody of the love of Jesus. I am humbled by these simple and easy to understand words of Jesus. I think we all need to confess that loving our enemies does not come naturally or necessarily easy, but it is commanded of us by the Lord. Oh that we would keep His words in mind and obey Him!!! Love & prayers, in Jesus, Cynthia
